Korean Pomeranian vs American Pomeranian

You will see Pomeranians advertised as Korean, American, teddy bear or show-style. They are all the same breed. What differs is the look breeders in each region tend to select for.

Korean Pomeranian vs American Pomeranian

Same breed, different styles

A Korean Pomeranian and an American Pomeranian are both Pomeranians. There is no separate Korean breed. The terms describe where the puppy's lines were developed and the style that breeders there have tended to favor. Within either group you will find a wide range of individual dogs, and some American breeders produce the rounder look while some Korean dogs look classically American. Think of these as tendencies, not rules.

The Korean style

Breeders in South Korea, and across East Asia more broadly, have put a lot of selection pressure on a particular look that is very popular as a companion dog. Korean-style Pomeranians often have:

  • A very round "teddy bear" face with full cheeks.
  • A short muzzle and a rounder skull.
  • Large, dark, round eyes set fairly wide.
  • Small ears often nearly hidden in coat.
  • A compact, short-backed body and short legs relative to the coat.
  • A dense, plush, stand-off coat that makes the dog look like a ball of fluff.

This is the look many people picture when they search for a teddy bear Pomeranian.

The American style

American Pomeranians, especially those from show lines, are bred toward the AKC standard. That standard describes a compact, short-backed dog with a wedge-shaped head, a "fox-like" expression, a muzzle that is short but not extremely so, small erect ears, and a profuse double coat. Compared with Korean-style dogs, American-style Pomeranians often have:

  • A slightly longer muzzle and more defined, fox-like face.
  • Ears that are more visible.
  • Proportions aimed at show-ring balance and movement.
  • Equally beautiful coats, sometimes groomed into a more sculpted show outline.

Is one healthier than the other?

Health depends far more on individual breeding choices than on country of origin. A thoughtful breeder anywhere selects healthy parents and avoids extremes. A few points are worth keeping in mind:

  • Very short muzzles can crowd the teeth, so dental care matters even more. See our grooming guide.
  • Very small size, sometimes paired with the Korean style, comes with its own considerations, covered in our teacup Pomeranian health guide.
  • Knees, airway and teeth are the areas to ask about with any Pomeranian, whatever its style.

Ask for vet records and talk to your own vet after the puppy arrives.

Temperament

Temperament is the same breed temperament: alert, affectionate, bold and vocal. Individual personality and early socialization matter much more than style. Our Pomeranian temperament guide covers what to expect.

Grooming differences

The plush Korean-style coat is often very dense and needs thorough line brushing down to the skin to prevent mats. Owners of Korean-style dogs frequently keep the coat trimmed into a rounded shape that exaggerates the teddy bear look. A neat scissored trim is fine; just avoid shaving the double coat short.

Which style is right for you?

If you love the round-faced, plush look, a Korean-style puppy may be exactly what you have in mind. If you prefer the classic fox-faced Pomeranian or are interested in showing, American-style lines fit better. Either way, choose the individual puppy and the breeder's care over the label.
