Pomeranian Size and Weight Chart
Pomeranians are the smallest of the spitz breeds, but there is still a real range in adult size. Here is what the standard says and roughly how puppies grow toward it.

The breed standard: 3 to 7 pounds
The American Kennel Club (AKC) standard calls for an adult Pomeranian weight of 3 to 7 pounds, with 4 to 6 pounds preferred for show dogs. Most adult Pomeranians stand roughly 7 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder, though the standard is written around weight and proportion rather than height.
Some pet Pomeranians mature above 7 pounds, especially from larger parents. That does not make them any less a Pomeranian; it just means they are outside the show standard. A dog well under 3 pounds as an adult is very small and deserves extra care. See our teacup Pomeranian health guide.
Approximate Pomeranian puppy weight chart
This table shows rough weight milestones for puppies heading toward three different adult sizes. Use it as a general reference, not a prediction for your puppy. Puppies grow in spurts, and individual puppies routinely land above or below these numbers.
| Age | Small adult (about 3 lb) | Medium adult (about 5 lb) | Larger adult (about 7 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks | 0.8 to 1 lb | 1.3 to 1.6 lb | 1.9 to 2.2 lb |
| 12 weeks | 1.2 to 1.4 lb | 2 to 2.4 lb | 2.8 to 3.3 lb |
| 16 weeks | 1.6 to 1.9 lb | 2.7 to 3.1 lb | 3.8 to 4.4 lb |
| 6 months | 2.2 to 2.6 lb | 3.7 to 4.3 lb | 5.2 to 6 lb |
| 9 months | 2.7 to 3 lb | 4.5 to 5 lb | 6.3 to 7 lb |
| 12 months | About 3 lb | About 5 lb | About 7 lb |

When do Pomeranians stop growing?
Most of a Pomeranian's growth happens in the first six months. Growth slows sharply after that, and most reach close to adult height by around 9 to 12 months. Some fill out a little more in the chest and coat until about 18 months. The coat in particular can make a dog look much bigger or smaller than its actual weight, and many puppies look thinner during the coat change described in the Pomeranian puppy uglies.
What determines adult size
- Parents and grandparents. Genetics are the biggest factor. The adult weights of the parents are a better guide than any formula.
- Litter size and birth order. Puppies from small litters often start bigger; the smallest puppy in a litter does not always stay the smallest.
- Nutrition. A complete diet supports healthy growth. Overfeeding does not make a puppy grow "bigger," only heavier. See our feeding guide.
- Health. Parasites or illness can slow growth temporarily. Regular vet checks catch these early.
Why nobody can guarantee an exact adult size
Breeders estimate adult size from the parents, the puppy's growth so far, and experience with their lines. A good estimate is usually given as a range, for example "likely 4 to 6 pounds." Be cautious of anyone promising that an 8-week puppy will be an exact weight as an adult, or that a puppy will "stay teacup." Neither is something anyone can control.
How to weigh your Pomeranian
- Use a digital kitchen or baby scale that reads in ounces or grams.
- Weigh at the same time of day, ideally before a meal.
- For a wiggly puppy, weigh it in a small basket and subtract the basket's weight.
- Write the number down weekly for the first six months, then monthly.
A puppy that stops gaining, or loses weight, should see a vet promptly. In toy breeds, small changes matter.
Healthy weight in an adult Pomeranian
Because the coat hides the body, judge condition with your hands. You should be able to feel the ribs easily with light pressure, and see a slight waist when you flatten the coat from above. Extra weight puts strain on small knees and the airway, both of which are sensitive areas in the breed. Your vet can tell you your dog's ideal weight.
